Tutorial Time! - Adding Text to .gifs and Stuff

Please forgive me for any laziness in explaining in advance because I am terrible at these things.

STEP 01: Open your .gif in photoshop

image

STEP 02: Make sure you have the animation window open

image

STEP 03: Add your text - make sure the layer is above all the others (this is important).

Play around with the font, size, position and justification until you like it.

I like to use Arial because that’s one of the most common fonts used for anime subtitles (and subtitles in general).

STEP 04: Adding the style.

Double click on the text or right-click for the drop-down menu and choose “Blending options”

image

Then choose one of the three options - depending on how fancy ya’ feelin’.

image

Add “stroke” to the text, an play around with the size and color options. Click “OK” when you’re done.

image

You should have something that looks like this:

image

Now click the “play” button at the bottom of the animation time line to make sure the layer style made it to all of the frames. Sometimes this works - other times not so much. This is one of those times when it didn’t. We’ll get to this - hold on.

STEP 05: Save your style!

Open your blending options again, and follow this visual.

image

The new style will appear in the “style” tab, so you don’t have to do this every goddamn time.

*STEP 05.5: Making sure your text is on every layer.

1) Make sure you’re happy with your text layer.

2) Add a new blank layer

image

3) Make sure only the text and the new layer are visible by clicking the little eye things

image

image

3) Make sure the blank layer is underneath the text layer

image

4) Right-click merge visible

image

Now you have this image layer - that you can’t change (unless you click undo of course) - but now they layer style will be on all of the .gif frames

5) Make the .gif frame layers you made invisible to visible again

*STEP 06: You probably need to change your image size if you want to upload this to tumblr (unless you can find a tutorial that can explain how to upload HQ .gifs to tumblr that making some fucking sense).

image

I find that 300 pixels in the width usually works for me, though, sometimes I do have to lower it to 250px.

image

STEP 07: Save Your .gif

image

Make sure to preview your final .gif, just cuz and save it.

image

And BAM! .Gif with text, son!

image

(I made the text too small, XD)

*steps that may be optional, I don’t know bruh
